Myofascial release technique is a therapeutic massage style that focuses on releasing tension and restrictions in the fascia, which is the dense & fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones and organs throughout the body. Fascia plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity and function of the musculoskeletal system, but it can become tight, restricted, or adhered due to factors such as poor posture, physical overuse, physically traumatic injuries or emotional factors.
During a myofascial release session, a trained massage therapist uses manual techniques to manipulate the fascia, aiming to restore its elasticity, mobility, and overall health. The technique involves applying sustained pressure to specific areas of tension or restriction, allowing the fascia to elongate and release. Unlike most traditional and common massage techniques that primarily target muscles, myofascial release focuses on the fascia and requires the therapist to apply gentle, sustained pressure for an extended period. This sustained pressure allows the fascia to respond and release gradually, promoting deeper relaxation and offers greater therapeutic effects to help the body to physically heal. Another approaches to myofascial release includes applying pressure directly to the restricted area or trigger points within the fascia, as well as gentle stretching and manipulation to encourage the fascia to release tension.
Myofascial release can be performed as a standalone therapy or integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan for various musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic pain, sports injuries, postural imbalances, and movement disorders. This is a great combination with other treatments such as acupuncture and chiropractic care. The benefits of myofascial release include improved flexibility / range of motion, pain relief, enhanced circulation, stress reduction, and is great at injury prevention due to helping improve the bodies mobility and alignment. Many clients report feeling lighter, more relaxed, and freer in their movement after a session.
Wellspring Acupuncture‘s talented myofascial release technique massage therapist, Leigh Erickson, is highly skilled in this advanced massage therapy technique.
